Introducing the DAPCEP/ PURSE Program
Promoting Underrepresented Girls Involvement in Research Science & Energy
The Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) is proud to announce the launch of the Promoting Underrepresented Girls Involvement in Research Science & Energy (PURSE) for young ladies currently in the 9th grade. The DAPCEP PURSE Program is part of a nationwide initiative by the National Science Foundation known as ITEST (Innovative Technical Experiences for Students and Teachers). In addition, the program will provide students exposure to the latest in renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE & EE) industries. This two year program will utilize both Saturday and Summer program components and other educational opportunities.
The DAPCEP PURSE Program is designed to:
- Ignite and sustain girls’ interest in science, engineering and leadership in the RE & EE industries.
- Engage them in team oriented programming with exposure to fundamental chemistry, physics and engineering concepts.
- Prepare girls with the academic building blocks to move fluidly through college science and engineering courses toward future leadership in science and energy.

What is this program?
The PURSE Program is a two year program that will begin in Spring 2010.
Who can apply?
Any young lady currently enrolled in the 9th grade during the 2009-2010 school year with parental consent.

Is there a fee for participation?
No, this program is provided at no cost to participants.
Is there a Summer Program or extended commitment?
The program requires a commitment of attending a residential summer course. One course is scheduled for Summer 2010 and a second course will be encouraged for Summer 2011 for participants. Additional programs will occur throughout the year for mentoring and additional exposure of participants to college students and university corporate professionals. There will be field trips incorporated into the program and these will be mandatory. We expect all students to fully participate in all phases of the program. All students and parents are expected to be on time and actively engaged.
What are the requirements for consideration?
- A completed DAPCEP PURSE Program Application Packet
- A copy of the applicant’s final 8th grade report card AND a copy of the most recent 9th grade report card from the 2009-2010 school year.
- Minimum Cumulative GPA of a 2.0 (C Average)
- Parent/Guardian Consent
- Applications will only be accepted at the January 16th information session.
- Applications turned in after the information session will not be considered for admission.

When will I find out if my child has been accepted into this program?
Notification letters will mailed on January 22, 2010.
If I am not admitted to the DAPCEP AYS Program, can I participate in the Spring Summer DAPCEP Program and Open House on February 6, 2010 at COBO Hall?
Yes. If you are not accepted, please visit www.dapcep.org to complete and print an application for Spring courses and an application for Summer courses. Bring two copies of your report card or transcript (if applying for Spring & Summer) to the Open House. If only applying to one session bring one application and one copy of your report card or transcript.
What is required of parents?
In education, the key to the success of your child is parent participation and involvement throughout the process. Parents will be required to participate in parent workshops and a portion of student activities.
