You've got questions, We've got answers
What is DAPCEP?
DAPCEP programming helps students to develop the motivation and awareness of skills necessary for academic achievement and successful careers. Student problem solving skills are developed with the use of technology, aiding in the supply of cognitive skills that any student needs as a basis for successful comprehension of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) subjects. To this end, DAPCEP provides teachers with the professional development they need to communicate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) material in an exciting, sound manner. Instructors are provided with curriculum materials based on industry-specific cues and acceptance in the higher educational community.
What grade does DAPCEP start?
There are three entry points for DAPCEP programming: Kindergarten, first grade, and fifth grade. Kindergarten and first grade students should contact Suzanne Wasson for application information. Fifth grade and older will apply for programming at our Open House, held twice per year at Cobo Hall. DAPCEP In-School programming is also available at select middle schools.
Does my child have to live in Detroit?
No! DAPCEP is available to all students!
Does my child have to attend Detroit Public Schools?
No! Our students come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds.
Is there a fee for the program?
DAPCEP programming is provided to students and their families free of charge.
When and where can my child apply for DAPCEP?
DAPCEP holds bi-annual events to register students for its Spring, Summer and Fall Program sessions. These Open Houses are typically held in September and February at Cobo Hall.
What are the requirements for admission into the DAPCEP program?
DAPCEP applicants must complete an application and provide a copy of their most current report card if your child is 5th-9th grade and a transcript if your child is in 10th-12th grade. Our standards require that students maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better with good attendance and citizenship to be considered for admission. The selection process is driven by our program providers; meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
Where can I obtain an application?
We strongly recommend that you complete the application on-line, however if you’re unable to complete the application on-line a limited supply of applications will be available at the office and at Cobo hall on the day of registration. Applications are generally available at the office two-three weeks prior to the open house.
Where are the classes held?
Saturday classes are held on corporate and university campuses. In-school classes are taught during school time. Summer classes are typically held on university campuses, and may be commuter or residential-based.
How long are the classes?
The duration of specific classes may vary, but typical Saturday sessions will run for five to six week sessions, 9:00am-12:00pm.
Can my child apply even if he or she does not receive letter grades?
Yes, we understand that some institutions adhere to alternative progress metrics. If your child does not receive letter grades, please submit a copy of his or her most recent progress report so DAPCEP can most accurately determine the child’s preparedness for selected programming.
Can my child apply if he or she is home schooled?
Yes, home-schooled children are welcome to apply. Please include a recent progress measure with your child’s application.
